Summary: This paper shows how airborne and ground geophysical methods can be combined to rapidly map with high resolution where the groundwater lies beneath a large basin straddled by the Mexico-US border. The San Pedro Basin is a critical migratory bird flyway whose survival is tied to groundwater exploitationThis effort is also a showcase for Mexican-US cooperation, where the results are greater than the sum of the individual parts.

Summary: This US Geological Survey Professional Paper shows that by using airborne electromagnetic (EM) and magnetic sensors, the groundwater can quickly be mapped in three dimensions beneath a large (~l,000 square kilometers) arid basin - in this case in southern Arizona and northern Mexico. The EM data map the water with 30-meter resolution down to 400 meters depth, while the magnetic data can be converted to depth-to-source to map the complex basement topography (as deep as 1,500 meters). This crystalline basement is effectively the bottom limit of the water saturated basin sediments. The San Pedro River is a major North American migratory bird fly-way, and is closely tied to the groundwater hydrology of the basin. In an area where groundwater withdrawal has huge economic, political, wildlife conservation, and even military implications, the 3D maps provided by this work allow critical decisions to be made based upon real information.

Summary: A new, USGS-patented technology utilizing the physical property of induced polarization, has been successfully used at sea to map large buried tracts of placer heavy minerals, including titanium oxides frequently associated with gold, platinum, and diamonds. Recent laboratory experiments suggest the technology can also be used to map Combined Stormwater Overflow of urban and industrial waste into Puget and Long Island Sounds.

Summary: A new towed-streamer technology can rapidly map drifting hydrocarbon plumes from well blowouts and leaking pipeline infrastructure, as well as seafloor hydrocarbon seeps in the deep abyssal plain of the south Atlantic Ocean to search for more “Deep Pre-Salt” fields. Laboratory experiments suggest that hydrocarbon plumes can be rapidly mapped in 4D, as well as characterize their real-time biodegradation by tracking bulk droplet size as it correlates with Spectral IP frequency dispersion over time.

Development of geophysical technologies, including deep geoelectrical soundings and potential fields analysis, to image volcanic edifices and their deep underlying structures including conduits and groundwater. 

Monitoring deep conductivity changes as a long-term volcanic eruption precursor.


Marine Induced Polarization CRADA and Patents

Development and commercialization of electrical geophysical sub-seafloor mapping for heavy placer sands and Rare-Earth Elements. This technology was used in South Africa, by means of a CRADA, for a large and successful commercial marine IP survey to map offshore titanium reserves.

A 3rd patent was recently awarded for a new technology to rapidly and efficiently map dispersed oil in the deep ocean. CRADA partners are planning to use this technology to hunt for seeps on the Atlantic Abyssal Plain, as part of an effort to extend the Deep Sub-Salt Oil discovery off the coast of Brazil.  

Plans are underway for sea-trials in Puget Sound to map toxic waste deposits dumped there from Combined Stormwater Overflow events; this will be done in cooperation with Metro Seattle.
