Volcanic Hazards

Marianne Guffanti is geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey where she has been employed since 1977.  Over the course of her scientific career, her research has focused on the development of geothermal systems in volcanic areas, the effect of tectonic regimes on the evolution of volcanic provinces, and characterization of volcanic-ash hazards to aviation.  From 1996 to 2001, she served as Coordinator of the USGS Volcano Hazards Program, which operates five volcano observatories to monitor and study the many restless and active volcanic centers of the United States.  She was a key member of the team that developed the National Volcano Early Warning System for the Uinted States in 2005.  Currently, she is Chief of two projects: (1) Ash Hazards Impacts and Mitigation Project and (2) World Volcanic Activity.  She serves as a volcanological advisor to the Federal Aviation Administration, Air Force Weather Agency, and the International Civil Aviation Organization.
