Dr. Rounds joined the U.S. Geological Survey in 1992 and has worked on a wide variety of topics, including water-quality monitoring and modeling of rivers and lakes around Oregon.

Selected Projects

Tualatin River Water-Quality Assessment [website]
A multifaceted, interdisciplinary, and long-term assessment of water quality in the Tualatin River and its tributaries. Selected topics of investigation include:
  • dynamics of the river's algae population,
  • water-quality modeling with an emphasis on phosphorus and its links to algae and dissolved oxygen,
  • measurement of sediment oxygen demand,
  • real-time water-quality monitoring,
  • trends and seasonality of water quality, and
  • various special topics.
 
Detroit Lake Model Development & Use [website]
Construction, calibration, and use of a model of temperature and suspended sediment for Detroit Lake on the North Santiam River in the Cascade Mountains. The model is being used to determine the effect of the lake on the transport of suspended sediment as well as the in-lake and downstream temperature effects of dam operations.
 
Willamette River Temperature Modeling [website]
An assessment of the temperature effects of point sources, riparian shading, and dam operations on the Willamette River. The flow and temperature models from the Willamette temperature TMDL were used to assess the efficacy of point-source thermal load trading, and a point-source heat-trading tool was developed using model results. Other simulations assessed the downstream thermal effects of selected riparian shade restoration projects and dam operations at Cougar Dam on the South Fork McKenzie River.
 
Klamath River Monitoring and Modeling [website]
An assessment of water quality in the Klamath River between Upper Klamath Lake and the Keno Dam. Study components include an extensive monitoring effort, specialized research investigations, and development of or modifications to a water-quality model.

Research Interests

Dr. Rounds' research interests focus on the water-quality modeling of river and lake systems, with particular emphasis on temperature, nutrients, dissolved oxygen, and algae. Previous and ongoing projects include work on the Tualatin River and its tributaries, Henry Hagg Lake, Detroit Lake and the North Santiam River, the Willamette River, and selected reaches of the Klamath River. Most of his work focuses on developing a better understanding of the characteristics and water-quality dynamics of a system so that it can be more effectively managed in the future.

In addition, Dr. Rounds is the author of the Alkalinity Calculator, a tool that analyzes alkalinity titrations, and the Data Grapher, a set of tools to make custom graphs and tables from USGS continuous water-quality monitoring data.
