Short Biography

Rick Healy is a member of the Unsaturated Zone Field Studies Project of the USGS National Research Program. His research addresses water, solute, and heat transport within the unsaturated zone. He specializes in groundwater recharge and simulation of flow and transport in the unsaturated zone. He received his BS and MS from the University of Illinois.

Groundwater Recharge

Understanding groundwater recharge is essential for successful management of water resources and modeling of fluid and contaminant transport with the subsurface. Although recharge is one of the most important components in groundwater studies, it is often poorly understood. Selection and application of methods for estimating recharge are complicated by limiting assumptions inherent in different methods and a general lack of hydrologic, geologic, climatic, and land-use data. Current research is focused on developing improved methods for estimating recharge, in terms of both theoretical and practical considerations.


Environmental Effects of Natural Gas Development

The study of environmental impacts of coal-bed natural gas (CBNG) development in the Powder River Basin is an ongoing research effort in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management. Research has focused on the following areas: 1) subsurface transport of water and chemicals from an impoundment for groundwater extracted as a byproduct of gas development; 2) beneficial use of produced water in subsurface drip irrigation systems; 3) historical rates of groundwater recharge in the Basin; and 4) natural accumulation of salts in soils and the susceptibility of those salts to be leached to groundwater under conditions of changing land use and climate.
