Short Biography

Blaine McCleskey started his career with the U.S. Geological Survey in 1997 as a chemist in the National Research Program. In 2010, he obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado where he developed a method to calculate the electrical conductivity of natural waters from its chemical composition. He is currently involved in several research projects in Yellowstone National Park, a wildfire affected watershed, and acid mine drainage sites. When not at work, Blaine spends a lot of time watching his kids play soccer and is an avid sailor, trail runner,and microbrew drinker.

Project: Chemical Modeling of Acid Waters

I conduct field and laboratory research on processes affecting the distribution of inorganic constituents in natural waters.  Most of my research focuses on redox sensitive compounds of arsenic, chromium, iron, sulfur, and mercury.  I also study conductivity methods and applications for natural waters.  Field sites have included the Summitville mine, CO, the Boulder Creek watershed, CO, the Mojave Desert, CA, the Questa mine, NM, and Yellowstone National Park.
