Short Biography

Paul is a Hydrologist with the National Research Program in Boulder, Colorado. Since 1987, he has been a principal investigator on many large scale and diverse hydrologic studies, including national scale acid rain studies, Grand Canyon flood reconstruction studies, paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental pollution studies on the glaciers of Wyoming, aquatic cycling of mercury and climate change studies as far south as the Florida Everglades and as far north as the Yukon River Basin, Alaska. Paul is also the laboratory supervisor for the Water, Energy, and Biogeochemical Budget (WEBB) Program. Paul encourages interactions among scientists and non scientists of diverse backgrounds and disciplines.

Characterization of Biotic and Biogeochemical Interactions at Environmental Interfaces

Paul focuses his current research on the cycling, transport and fate of mercury through interactions with organic carbon using a watershed approach. Mercury in the environment is of great concern because, in it toxic form as methylmercury, it bioaccumulates and biomagnifies up through the food web. This research aims at understanding the pathways and production of methylmercury in aquatic systems and to the food web.  The current research is being conducted in the climate change sensitive northern regions of Alaska in the Yukon River Basin watershed. As the climate continues to warm, it is expected that hydrologic conditions and permafrost thaw will also change, leading to changes in mercury and organic carbon cycling.

Research interests and locations include:

Mercury dynamics in the Yukon River during the Spring snowmelt flush

Assessment of mercury stocks in norther permafrost soils

Groudwater flowpath studies in northern Minnesota using tritium
