I joined the USGS NRP as a student appointments in 1982. Since then, my research has involved long-term interdisciplinary research projects that characterize environmental sources of organic and inorganic contaminants, quantify the biogeochemical processes that control their fate, and assess their potential effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Particular emphasis is focused on the interactions between chemistry, hydrology, and biology. A major area of expertise is the analysis of emerging contaminants by gas chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry, which provides a foundation for assessing their occurrence, exposure pathways, and impacts.

 

Current research focuses on biologically-active contaminants and receiving water (surface water and groundwater) attenuation capacity. Compounds being investigated include endocrine disrupting chemicals, neuro-active pharmaceuticals, and antimicrobials. We develop state-of-the-science approaches to landscape-based, watershed-scale (second-order streams to continental rivers) evaluation of chemical loading and fate combined with the field-based biological assays, to establish a holistic understanding of contaminant behavior and impacts. This interdisciplinary research involves teams of scientists to allow comprehensive evaluation of critical water resource issues.

Developing a priority list of endocrine disrupting chemicals based on comprehensive analysis of the literature on environmental occurrence and biological effects. A set of objective criteria have been established for ranking the potential endocrine disrupting chemicals, and approximately 5,000 scientific publications have been compiled. A sub-set of approximately 500 papers is currently under detailed review and a database is being developed.

 

Working with the Bureau of Reclamation, the City of Waco, and other partners (including Baylor University) to design and construct an innovative wastewater treatment wetland based on physicochemical and hydraulic principles to optimize attenuation of endocrine disrupting chemicals and other contaminants of concern. This landscape-scale feature will improve water quality for downstream potable-water reuse, provide enhanced habitat function, and create educational and public awareness opportunities.

 

Developing new research analytical methods for biologically-active contaminants using gas chromatograph/tandem mass spectrometer. The method under current development is a combined hormone-phytoestrogen analysis for water and fish plasma to support endocrine disruption research activities.

 

Research on the occurrence and effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals into the poorly studied aquatic environment of suburban ponds and impacts on amphibians. This is an extension of recent work on fish endocrine disruption in Minnesota Lakes and is being conducted in Connecticut in collaboration with Yale University.

 

Research on the role of major wastewater treatment plant infrastructure upgrades on contaminant fate and ecosystem impacts. In the fall of 2012, the Boulder, Colorado wastewater treatment plant will undergo a major technology upgrade by converting from disinfection using chlorine gas/sodium bisulfate chlorination/dechlorination to disinfection by low-pressure ultraviolet-light disinfection. We are using this operational-scale experiment to evaluate the impact of disinfection byproduct contaminants on fish health using pre-upgrade 21-day on-site fathead minnow exposures coupled with water sampling and chemical analysis (FY13). A similar post-upgrade assessment will be conducted one year later (FY14).

 

Another major infrastructure study is at Fourmile Creek, Iowa where we are assessing the long-term impact of completely shutting off the City of Ankeny's wastewater treatment plant discharge, that provides the majority of flow to an urban stream ecosystem. In FY12-13 we are collecting and analyzing effluent chemistry, stream hydrology, and stream biology data under pre-shutoff conditions. The discharge will be discontinued in FY14, at which point the stream ecosystem response will be asessed.
