Short Biography

Currently a senior scientist with more than 30 years with the USGS, Dr. Nordstrom is recognized internationally for his research on acid mine drainage, radioactive waste disposal, geothermal chemistry, geomicrobiology, arsenic geochemistry, thermodynamics, and geochemical modeling. He has a B.A. degree in chemistry from Southern Illinois University, a M.S. degree in geology from the University of Colorado, and a PhD in applied earth sciences from Stanford University. With more than 220 publications, he is particularly known for his measurement of negative pH in mine waters, his evaluation and compilation of thermodynamic properties, arsenic geochemistry, and natural background concentrations at mine sites.

Hydrogeochemistry

My research focus is on the hydrogeochemistry of water-rock interactions, especially changes in water chemistry associated with metal mining activities and the production of acid mine drainage. Towards that end, my research includes evaluation of basic thermodynamic and kinetic data used in geochemical modeling, collection and analysis of water samples, interpretation of water chemistry collected from field sites (usually mined and mineralized areas and geothermal areas) and microbiological effects on water chemistry. Recent studies include the geothermal chemistry of solutes at Yellowstone National Park, especially the speciation of redox-sensitive elements including microbiological catalysis, and fate and transport in drainage systems.
